Welcome to Hamerton and Steeple Gidding

Sawpit Lane in Hamerton, Huntingdonshire

Hambertune (11th Century); Hamertun (12th Century) and Hamerton (Modern)

Hamerton extends from Salome Wood, on the Fay Way, to the Alconbury Brook. In the village are picturesque, colour washed old cottages with characteristic steep gables, dormers and thatched roofs. The bridge across the little river rests upon 17th century masonry. There is a moated site near the old Rectory. Manor Farm, Grange Farm and Rookery Farm are fine old period houses.

Redinges (11th Century); Giddingges, Giddinge (12th Century); Stepel Geddynge (14th Century); Gyedyng, Giddynge Abbatis (15th Century) and Steeple Gidding (Modern)

Steeple Gidding stands on rising ground near the Alconbury Brook. Only grassy mounds and fish ponds mark the site of the medieval hall. The parish church, dating mainly from the Decorated period has 12th century work in the south porch but has been considerably restored. The small spire,  from which the village takes its distinguishing name, rises from a tower which carries pre-Reformation bells and bears an incised consecration cross.

Although somewhat heavily restored, the Perpendicular church retains much interest and has a fine embattled tower with a peal of five old bells. Carvings to the roof should be noticed, also the rood loft doorways and stairs, and traces of medieval wall paintings.

Hamerton and Steeple Gidding is one of the parishes of the District of Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is Huntingdon, the other principle towns being St Ives home of the Chapel on the Bridge, St Neots the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire, the Roman town of Godmanchester and Ramsey site of the former Abbey.
